Performs troubleshooting and maintenance work on Postal Service buildings and building equipment systems, and preventive maintenance inspections of building, building equipment, and building systems. Maintains and operates large air-conditioning and heating systems, compressed air supply systems, plumbing and electrical.

This position is for use at headquarters and headquarters related facilities. Formerly Facility Maintenance Technician.

1.   Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs for the facility and associated equipment (e.g., railings, guards , gates, dock lifts, light fixtures, electrical system) to ensure safety and security of personnel, postal property, and the mail. Repairs equipment to USPS standards for safety and optimal work conditions.

2.   Installs and/or modifies electrical circuitry according to Postal policy and professional standards to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Develops and updates the facility Electrical Work Plan to comply with regulatory requirements and postal policy.

3.   Performs preventive and predictive maintenance inspections on building equipment to locate incipient mechanical malfunctions and assess the standard of maintenance. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions using advanced testing procedures and referencing diagrams, blueprints, manuals to determine necessary repairs. Observes and inspects facility equipment continually to assess if unscheduled maintenance or repair is needed.

4.   Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC systems and components to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operation. Monitors facility systems to check HVAC components for functionality and that required settings adhere to standard work conditions for our employees, contractors, and guests.

5.   Performs basic repairs on plumbing systems and components to ensure safe and efficient water supply, heating, and drainage for the facility. Installs basic plumbing components such as a water heater, sinks, and toilets.

6.   Drives and operates motorized lift, per current license and authorization, to reach high elevations for maintenance and repairs following appropriate safety protocol.

7.   Determines needed parts, tools, equipment, and resources to complete repairs. Completes purchase request forms and/or notifies leadership of parts needed.

8.   Performs minor repairs to building and exterior grounds using applicable tools and equipment to perform tasks. Maintains and repairs locks and locking mechanisms for the facility.

9.   Communicates status updates and scheduled maintenance activities to stakeholders. Completes documentation such as work orders, logs , and related maintenance records (e.g., end of tour paperwork/route sheets) to maintain records.

10.   Observes established safety practices and requirements to ensure the safety of self and others while performing maintenance activities (e.g., puts tools and equipment away, inspects tools and equipment for proper serviceability, maintains and uses issued personal protective equipment [PPE]), creates safety zone (voltage and other safety warning labels are in place, follows energy control procedures).

11.   Participates in classroom, on-the-job, and online training programs; travels to attend courses in other postal facilities , trade schools, or manufacturer sites. Completes testing, evaluation, and certification activities associated with training.

12.   Responds to requests for assistance from other mechanics and collaborates to troubleshoot equipment and identify needed repairs. Supports relocation of machines and equipment ensuring removal , install and safe and efficient operation.

13.   May drive a vehicle to transport tools, equipment, employees, materials, or in the normal performance of assigned duties.

14.   Performs maintenance activities and related duties as assigned.
